What are the benefits of EAP?
- The EAP is available to management to help maintain a positive and productive work place
- You can call the EAP to consult on how to manage problems/challenges with individuals or groups of employees
- You can refer employees to the EAP for help resolving problems that affect their work
- We can guide you in making a referral and collaborate with in providing the support that both you and the employee need to resolve the issue
- The EAP can provide training and consultation to help with organizational challenges and change
- The EAP is flexible and responsive to all of your organizational needs
How do I make an EAP referral?
Informal
- Be proactive – Be on the look out for potential problems and address them early
- Have informal discussion with employee ask questions
- Educate employee about EAP benefits and encourage their participation
- Follow up
Formal
- Based on performance not personal issues
- Document performance
- Contact your supports including; supervisor, HR, and EAP
- Take disciplinary action if called for
- Make mandatory referral to EAP
Guidelines for confronting personnel problems
- Validate the employee and his value as appropriate
- Define the problem in objective and behavioral terms
- State the goals and expectations in positive terms
- Lay out potential consequences both positive and negative
- Avoid counseling, that’s where we come in
- Sell EAP as a resource
